The term surfactant is a condensed composition of “surface active agent”. Surfactants are compounds that lower the surface tension (or interfacial tension) between two liquids or between a liquid and a solid. Surfactants may act as detergents, wetting agents, emulsifiers, foaming agents, and dispersants.

Silicone surfactants improve the quality of the foam by emulsifying incompatible formulation ingredients, lowering the surface tension, promoting nucleation of bubbles during mixing, stabilizing the rising foam by reducing stress concentrations in thinning cell-walls, and by counteracting the defoaming effect of any solids added to or formed in the process.
